Credits and licences

The Scrollwheel app and Scrollwheel OS are licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or (at your option) any later version, and come with no warranty. The source code will be published at launch, with the licence in LICENSE and every third-party component in NOTICE. The app’s About screen lists them already.

Scrollwheel OS is written from scratch. No code is copied from Rockbox. We read Rockbox’s source and documentation to learn how the hardware works, and wrote our own code from what we learned.

  • Rockbox: its tools and documentation explained the iPod’s firmware partition and bootloader layout, and its hardware knowledge guides Scrollwheel OS. Rockbox itself is a separate project of the Rockbox community.
  • libgpod: documented the iPod’s music database and artwork formats, which the app reads and writes with its own code.

The bootloader’s source is pinned to Rockbox’s tag bootloader_ipods_v4. The file checksums, the source archive and our written offer for it are kept with Scrollwheel’s source code. Rockbox builds themselves are never hosted by Scrollwheel: the app downloads them from rockbox.org only when you ask.
