Adding music

In the Library tab, tap Add Music to pick songs, or Add a Folder… to add a whole folder. The app copies them to the iPod and adds them to its music database, so they show up in Apple’s firmware, Rockbox and Scrollwheel OS alike.

Your file What happens
MP3, AAC (.m4a, .mp4, .m4b), WAV Copied as they are
FLAC, ALAC, WavPack, Ogg Vorbis, Opus Converted to AAC on the phone, which every iPod firmware plays (the default)
WavPack album + .cue sheet Split into one track per cue entry (pick the .wv together with its .cue)
Files over 4 GB Refused: the iPod’s disk format can’t hold them

Turn on Keep lossless songs lossless to skip conversion. Then FLAC, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis and Opus are copied as they are, and ALAC and WavPack become FLAC. These songs play only in Scrollwheel OS: Apple’s firmware won’t list them. Lossless takes about three times the space of AAC.

Hi-res files (above 48 kHz) get a choice: Convert for the iPod (recommended: 16-bit at 44.1 or 48 kHz) or Copy as is, which may stutter.

  • Get Lyrics for My Library fetches synced lyrics for every song from LRCLIB, a free public lyrics service, for your personal use.
  • For one song: Get Lyrics, Paste Lyrics… / Edit Lyrics…, or Remove Lyrics. The editor understands timed lines such as [01:23.45] words.
  • On the iPod, lyrics show in Scrollwheel OS (iPod mini and nano 1st generation). In Now Playing, hold Select and choose Lyrics. Synced lyrics follow the song with the current line highlighted. Plain lyrics scroll with the wheel.
  • Find Missing Artwork looks up covers on MusicBrainz and the Cover Art Archive.
  • For one album: Set Artwork… to use your own picture, or Find Artwork.
  • A cover, folder or front image picked along with the songs becomes the album’s cover.
  • Art that iTunes put on the iPod is never changed.

New Playlist, Add Songs, Rename and Delete. Deleting a playlist keeps its songs on the iPod. Songs you star as Favourites in Scrollwheel OS can be gathered with Copy to a “Favourites” Playlist.

When the app reads the iPod, it picks up the play counts, ratings and On-The-Go playlists made on the iPod, so they’re kept the next time it saves.
